Eastern medicine has a unique perspective to health and healing.  While the traditional Western approach may be to treat illness and disease as problems that need to be cured with prescriptions and pills, the Eastern philosophy concentrates on encouraging the body and mind to be in balance with its surroundings.

Massage has been a part of traditional Chinese health and wellbeing for many centuries.  Some of the benefits of massage include restoring the body’s energy, improving circulation, reduction of stress, anxiety and depression, relief from headaches and arthritis, better sleep and relief from sinus and respiratory problems.

Ikoi Spa of Takapuna, Auckland, offers four different types of massage to help heal and relieve symptoms of ill-health:

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu means “finger pressure,” which defines the shiatsu technique. In shiatsu therapy, pressure is applied to pressure points on the body, using thumbs, hands, elbows, knees. Acupressure techniques where thumbs, hands, and elbows are applied to pressure points on the body, is incorporated with stretching the limbs, joints, and pressure points and meridian system. Shiatsu massage has many benefits for the body and the mind. It restores and maintains the body’s energy, improves circulation, restores the circulatory system and balances the body’s energy flow.

Ikoi Spa offers Shiatsu Massage for 60, 90 or 120 minutes at prices of $120, $170 and $220.

Hot Stone Massage

The hot stone massage melts away tension and promotes deeper muscle relaxation through the placement of smooth, water-heated basalt stones at key points on the body.

Ikoi Spa’s professional massage therapists integrate the hot stones in a massage which offers enhanced benefits and encourages healthy blood circulation.

Hot stone massages last for 90 or 120 minutes at a price of $200 or $260.

Oil Massage

Choose from Ikoi Spa’s own blends of pure essential oils. These are used with deep tissue massage techniques to completely destress and relax the muscles.

Ikoi Spa offers oil massages of 60, 90 or 120 minutes for $130, $180 and $230.

Reflexology is inspired by the philosophy that the vital organs of the body are connected to the reflex points in the feet. This treatment aims to unblock latent energy, improve circulation, revitalise energy and enhance general wellbeing.

A 45-minute reflexology massage at Ikoi Spa is $85.

Ikoi Spa also offers the “Short & Sweet” 30-minute massage, which is a personalised massage to suit your needs. You may choose to focus on the head, neck, shoulders, back, arms, or legs.
