Queen Margaret College is this year celebrating 100 years of exemplary education of girls and women in Wellington, with its official centenary weekend being held from Thursday 6 through Sunday June 9, 2019.

The centenary weekend will not only celebrate the school in its modern form but reconnect past students, parents, staff and anyone who has a connection with the college.

With a range of events being held on campus and around Wellington, anyone who has been associated with the school is being encouraged to register their information at the centenary website, www.qmc100.co.nzand to spread the word to make sure nobody misses out on this once in a century celebration.

Queen Margaret College Principal, Jayne-Ann Young, is delighted to be celebrating the school's centenary.

Principal Jayne-Ann Young says pupils and staff will be celebrating throughout the year, with the highlight being the four-day event in June, the weekend after Queen's Birthday Weekend.

"The school actually opened on Tuesday 19th of February 1919. This year, the 19th of February is also a Tuesday. There's a beautiful synergy there," says Young.

"On Tuesday the 19th we are having our in-house celebration for our current students, and of course it is cake day. It's a school tradition to have birthday cake on that day each year and with this being our hundredth birthday, it will be extra special."

Young says there are many events planned for the year, with students, staff and the Wellington community getting involved in the celebrations.

"One of the most important things we've done from a school perspective is to have a student voice centenary committee, which is ensuring we hear from our students and what they would like to get out of this year."

Many small celebrations are happening throughout the year within the school, such as centenary logos to be used on the uniforms for the year and even a community member making macarons incorporating the logo.

In June this year, Queen Margaret College in Wellington will be celebrating 100 years of education for girls.

"But the highlight of the year will be the centenary weekend," says Young, "and that's when Libby Carson, our wonderful events manager for that weekend, comes into play."

Carson says it's shaping up to be a unique few days, with something to suit everyone amongst a varied range of events.

"We would really like people to reconnect back to the college," she says. "We would love to hear from people who may have lost touch or haven't thought about being part of the college community. They were part of QMC's past and our fervent hope is for them to become part of QMC's future."
